Mentoring vs. Therapy vs. Coaching
It’s one of the first questions parents ask — and one of the most important. Here’s the honest answer.
| Mentoring | Therapy | Coaching | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Focus | Growth, confidence, life skills, a trusted relationship | Diagnosing and treating mental health conditions | Specific goals and performance |
| Who provides it | A consistent, trained adult mentor | A licensed clinician (LPC, LCSW, psychologist) | A certified coach |
| Best when… | Your teen needs guidance, structure, and someone in their corner | Your teen is in crisis or shows signs of a mental health condition | Your teen is stable and chasing a defined goal |
| At A-Team | Our core work — trauma-informed and teen-specific | We refer out and gladly work alongside your teen’s therapist | Built into our goal coaching sessions |
The honest version
Ms. Kay is not a licensed therapist, and mentoring is not a substitute for mental health treatment. If your teen needs clinical care, therapy should come first — full stop. That honesty is part of how we work.
But many teens don’t need a diagnosis. They need a consistent, trusted adult who isn’t their parent — someone trauma-informed who can help them build confidence, cope with stress, repair friendships, and move toward their goals. That’s mentoring, and it’s what we do every day.
And it’s not either/or: many of our mentees also see a therapist. Mentoring reinforces that clinical work with real-life practice, accountability, and encouragement between sessions.
